Profiles on Treasures -The Devoted Partner

Like many Crown Heights residents, Reb Dovid can be found learning every day before and after his 9-5 day job. The thing about Dovid is he is rarely alone. He is often seen with a Chavrusa, loudly and animatedly discussing the open seforim before them.

Dovid says he makes sure to learn with a Chavrusa for many reasons. Firstly, he tries to involve others who might otherwise not make the time to learn. Moreover, knowing there is another person who relies on him, someone who is waiting for him, ensures he will take the repsonsibilty seriously, and not be late or miss the time altogether.

"Most of all," says Dovid, "I love learning with a Chavrusa. It's simply more geshmak. I wouldn't want it any other way."

Chavrusa learning is certainly nothing new. It's a method that has been used for thousands of years. In Taanis, 7:, the Gemora quotes R' Nachman Bar Yitzchok, who says that the reason Torah is compared to wood in the Possuk, "Eitz chaim hi lamachazikim bo," is to teach us that just as a small piece of wood can light a far larger branch, Talmidei Chachamim sharpen one another. Rav Chanina said further, "I learned a lot from my teachers, but even more from my friends..."
